Holiday Programmes - now at Silverdale & Albany!

Information

The 2020 school holiday programmes will begin on Monday 6th January and Brain Play is planning a whole month of tech based activities for your child to get involved in.

 

Our holiday programmes run from 9:00am - 3:00pm every week day during the school holiday period.

 

We also offer before and after class care from 7:45am - 8:45am, and 3:15pm - 5:15pm for just $8.00 extra per hour.

Locations

Our Albany programme will be held at Upper Harbour Primary School. The address is 140 Kyle Road, Albany, 0632.

 

We're based in the school hall there which can be access by using the Miromiro Street school carpark, entering the school grounds, and walking past the junior playground into the centre of the school. The hall is on the left here and our purple signage will be clearly displayed.

 

Our Silverdale programme will be held at KingsWay Senior School Campus The address is 100 Jelas Road, Red Beach, 0932.

We're based in the Wharenui Room here which is on the left hand side of the school courts, as you enter from the driveway leading to the main car park.

Age guidelines do apply for some courses so please only enrol your child if they meet this age requirement.

 

Your child will be required to bring a laptop device and charger along for the day. Device specific information will be listed at the end of this page.

 

You can also hire a device from Brain Play for just $8.00 per day.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Arduino. An Arduino is a microcontroller used to create electronics and robotics projects. In this course we'll use the Arduino chip to write code for LEDs, buzzers, motors, and other electronics components. We'll also take some time to investigate Arduinos as part of robots, and use the programming languages Blockly and C / C++ to control them.

WEBSITE DESIGN AGES 8+

In this course students will learn the popular programming language HTML to create real life websites. Students will learn about item formatting, inserting images, links, and videos, and how to change colours, fonts, and item sizing, all using programming.

This course is a great step up from our coding holiday programme if your child has attended that before.

Laptop and charger required. Chrome Book also suitable.

LEGO CREATIONS AGES 5 - 8

This course is designed for our younger learners, to get them involved and excited about building and engineering. We'll use complex LEGO pieces to compete in timed challenges to build machines, interactive games, and STEM based designs.

No laptop required.

CODING AGES 5+ AND 8+

Our most popular course! During this coding course students will experiment with our most popular programming activities to learn about the different ways we can use coding. From controlling game characters, to creating their own unique animations - with coding, kids can do it all.

All students will have the opportunity to work with Blockly and typing interfaces.

This course can be a continuation course for those who have attended before.

ROBOTICS AGES 5+ AND 8+

Our robotics one day course will introduce students to a variety of different robots that they'll learn to build, modify, control, and write code for! We'll work with three different sets of robots throughout the day to learn about sensors, inputs, outputs, and interactivity.

This course can be a continuation course for those who have attended before!

Laptop required, Chrome Books also suitable.

BRAIN BOX ELECTRONICS AGES 5+ AND 8+

Science and Technology come together!

In this course we'll explore electricity, circuits, and components such as switches, slide switches, buttons, and sensors.

We'll start off with circuit building, and progress into writing code for microcontrollers.

Laptop required. Chrome Book suitable.

ANIMATION AGES 5+ AND 8+

Our animation course will teach students to create cartoons, videos, and interactive stories. There is also a design element to this course where students can draw and modify characters, create backgrounds, and add sounds and music to their creation.

Our younger learners will experiment with Scratch, and our older learners design and animation software.

This course can be a continuation course for those who have attended before!

Laptop and charger required. Chrome Book not suitable for older learners (ages 8+).

3D DESIGN AND PRINTING AGES 8+

As well as learning how to print 3d models, students will also have the opportunity to design and convert their own 3d concepts using 3d modelling software.

Students will take home any simple models on the day, and ambitious ones will be printed over the weekend and delivered.

We'll have new challenges on offer for any students who have attended before.

MINECRAFT INTRODUCTION AGES 5 - 8

Want to enter the wonderful world of Minecraft?

In this course we'll introduce Minecraft newbies to all the amazing features of this highly creative and detailed game.

We'll learn about the different game modes, how to survive a night with found and crafted resources, and of course how to create incredible buildings, and infrastructure for use in game play.

PYTHON AGE 8+

Want to know the ins and outs of the programming language used by IBM, Google, Facebook, and YouTube - you're looking at the right course!

In this course we'll explore the programming language Python to learn about its key concepts, and then apply these to create animations, and simple games.

Laptop required. Chrome Book suitable.

JAVASCRIPT AGE 8+

Want to know the ins and outs of the programming language used by Ebay, Netflix, and Uber - this JavaScript course is the one for you.

We'll explore key JavaScript concepts, and places we see JavaScript online and in real life. Later in the day we'll also use JavaScript to design simple games and animations.

COMPUTER DECONSTRUCTION AGE 8+

This course is aiming to bridge the gap between the background logics and foreground technology to let learners succeed in computer science and STEM education.


During this course students will learn about the history of computers, and explore each individual component and their role inside the computer. We'll completely pull apart the inside of computers, to identify these key pieces of hardware. We'll also attempt to put the computers back together toward the end of the day!

MINECRAFT CLUB AGE 8+

The course you've been asking for! Minecraft for senior students.

In this course students will collaborate, share their knowledge, and take part in Minecraft building challenges. Challenges will be themed around science and computer programming.

 

We'll compete to last the longest in survival mode. We'll even discuss and dabble in redstone sharing our skills and learning from each other.

Minecraft account required. 

GRAPHIC DESIGN AGE 8+

Bringing together the best of technology and design.

In this course students will learn about the fundamentals of design, rules of design, and take part in quizzes and challenges to test their knowledge.

Students will work on creating their own pieces of graphic design, and on photo editing to apply their newly acquired skills.

ENGINEERING AGES 5 - 8

A practical and challenging building course!

In this course students will take part in several building and engineering challenges to plan, construct, and test out crafty creations. We'll compete against each other, and work together, to come up with contraptions and devices to complete the set tasks.

Device required. Chrome Book, tablet, iPad, or Laptop suitable.

SCIENCE - BOTANY AGES 5+ AND 8+

In this course we'll turn our focus to the fascinating and important world of plants. We'll explore less common flora, that works in incredible ways. We'll also plant our own seeds, and design a personalised pot plant to take home!

Device required. Chrome Book, tablet, iPad, or Laptop suitable.

SCIENCE - SOLAR SYSTEM AGES 5 - 8

In this course we'll explore our solar system and the planets that take habitat here.

We'll use LEGO to build planet replicas, and at the end of the day we'll craft our own fizzy planets (bath bombs) to take home - based on what we learnt throughout the day.

SCIENCE - DINOSAUR EXPLORATION AGES 8+

In this course we'll explore the giants that used to walk our earth. We'll collect facts and information, before building our own replicas of our favourite beasts, and their habitat.

MICRO:BIT CODING & ELECTRONICS AGES 8+

The hugely popular BBC Micro:Bit is now at Brain Play! An all in one micro-computer with programmable sensors, LEDs, touch pads, and more!

We'll use the Micro:Bit to complete electronics projects including creating motion detectors, interactive games, musical instruments and more!

Micro:Bit has a large number of electronics and robotics addons that students can continue using outside of Brain Play.
